Journalists, editors, freelancers, and bloggers can take a free course on Basics of Media Security online.
This the course is organized by the Academy of Media Security Orkhan Dzhemal and the Justice for Journalists Foundation to equip Russian-speaking media workers with the skills and abilities needed to protect them from professional risks.
Once completed, you will be able to identify and analyze your risks and arm yourself with the knowledge and skills you need to save yourself and your colleagues.
The program provides access to an extensive resource base in Russian, including advice on where to go for help in the event of an emergency, arrest and other serious problems.

The program is structured by thematic modules – you can go through all of them or choose those that you think are most relevant for yourself.
- Risk analysis and structured analytical tools.
- Fundamentals of Physical Security in Risk Areas.
- Information and cybersecurity.
- Psychological and emotional safety, work with trauma.
- Legal protection against media risks.
Lessons are taught by 14 experts from nine countries: Azerbaijan, Georgia, Turkey, Lithuania, Russia, Ukraine, Uzbekistan, Canada and the UK.
Academy students who complete all modules and successfully pass the tests will receive a certificate.
It takes a month to complete the course.
The Orkhan Dzhemal Academy of Media Security is named in memory of the journalist who was brutally murdered on July 31, 2018, along with two colleagues Kirill Radchenko and Alexander Rastorguev in the Central African Republic.
