Students at the Kazakh-Russian specialized school-lyceum No. 54 named after I.V. Panfilov crossed borders virtually and presented Kazakhstan to peers.

Pupils and teachers around the world have switched to distance learning. Digital tools are enabling them not only to continue studying online but also to virtually cross-national borders and connect with peers from around the world. On 21 and 22 May, 13 schools from 12 countries met online in Microsoft Teams on International Lesson of English language. Among them was the Kazakh-Russian specialized school-lyceum No. 54 named after I.V. Panfilov from Almaty, Kazakhstan.

The purpose of the event was to allow pupils to cross closed borders virtually and connect with peers from other countries with modern technology. Aim of this virtual travel was to broaden students’ knowledge about other countries, to practice the English language, and learn new words. It was also crucial to achieving the quality improvement of education using advanced digital technologies in education, developing digital skills of teachers and students, as well as establishing the approach of multi-national co-education.

The lesson was devoted to the topic “My country”. More than 120 students and their teachers attended the online experience, while one school represented each country. Students from different countries took turns in presenting their countries during the Microsoft Teams video call, talking about the history, culture, national traditions and outstanding scientists and athletes, traditional cuisine and sights, inviting each other to visit their countries. Students actively asked each other questions in English, which is a foreign language to everyone. They improved their English skills and learned many new and useful words and phrases.

Pupils of the 8th grade of school-lyceum №54 decently represented Kazakhstan, demonstrating a confident knowledge of the English language. During their video performance, students set the image of the State flag of the Republic of Kazakhstan as a background, explaining to others from different countries the meanings of the symbols depicted. Also, in their presentation, the students showed not only the geographical location of the country, photographs of traditional dresses and cuisine, but also the picturesque landscapes of the vibrant nature of the Republic of Kazakhstan, inspiring all listeners to visit the country.

“We are very proud to represent Kazakhstan in an international online lesson. This is a very unusual format, but a great opportunity for students to improve their English, visit other countries, get to know each other and learn a lot, without leaving their rooms.”, added Asel Alpysbaeva, an English teacher at lyceum school No. 54, Almaty.

Tibor Koleyak, Country Manager of Microsoft in Kazakhstan, addressed the students: “I am delighted that we are here together, online. This is a great chance to learn something new about other countries and cultures. Besides, students will be able to improve their knowledge of English, learn new words, phrases, and practice spoken English. This is a great example of how technology helps students learn, share knowledge, and communicate without boundaries. For sure, today, it is necessary to apply modern technologies in education for each student and teacher to have the opportunity to achieve more.
