Internews launches a series of online media information sessions on elections

On August 5, the Zoom platform hosted an information meeting for editors and journalists of the Kyrgyz media in connection with the upcoming parliamentary elections in October.

Internews Director Elina Karakulova at the opening session with the participation of 40 journalists, she noted that, together with the CEC and the IMP, a series of trainings will be held in the coming weeks within the framework of the Media-K project and with the support of USAID.

These online meetings will help journalists understand the new voting algorithm amid the coronavirus pandemic, she said.

Chairman of the Central Election Commission Nurzhan Shaildabekova said in an online meeting that the election commission is ready to interact with the media and provide information on all stages of the election process at various online events and briefings. She also said that all meetings of the CEC are open and accessible to journalists.

The head of the Central Election Commission stressed the role of the media in the electoral process.

“There are international standards for media participation and activity during voting: accuracy, reliability, honesty, balance, equal treatment of all candidates when covering their activities, impartiality and respect for the privacy of candidates,” she said.

Nurzhan Shildabekova called on the media to form an objective opinion about candidates and parties, to comprehensively cover the elections, including the activities of the election commission, which is ready to provide a full range of information.

– We are holding elections in a pandemic, and this requires us to take all the necessary measures.

A special algorithm has been developed at each stage of the election campaign. On election day, a full set of measures will be provided to protect citizens, observers and PEC members, temperature control, disinfection of premises and surfaces, disposable gloves and masks.

All actions at the polling station will be carried out in a non-contact mode, the head of the CEC added.

Gulnara Jurabayeva, a member of the working group on informing voters and other subjects of the electoral process about the preparation and holding of elections to the Jogorku Kenesh, made a presentation on legal regulation and practice of voting.
