Border guard wounded on Kyrgyz-Tajik border

A serviceman of the State Border Service of Kyrgyzstan received a gunshot wound as a result of an incident on a section of the state border with Tajikistan. This was reported by Radio Azattyk (Kyrgyz edition of Radio Liberty) with reference to the press service of the State Border Service.

According to the agency, in the Eki-Tash area of ​​the Batken region, unknown persons in Tajikistan fired a shot at the Kyrgyz border guard, presumably from a hunting rifle.

“As a result, a soldier of the border detachment received a through wound in his hand. He received the necessary medical attention. The state of health of the wounded is assessed as satisfactory, ”the State Border Service said.

A meeting of border representatives of Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan is currently taking place. The situation on the section of the state border is stable, the State Border Service of Kyrgyzstan specifies.

As reported by the national news agency of Tajikistan “Khovar”, the press center of the border troops of the State Committee for National Security of the republic confirmed the injury of the border guard from the Kyrgyz side. At the same time, it is reported that at a distance of one kilometer from the state border on the Kyrgyz side, a citizen of Tajikistan Vohid Vakhhobov was wounded in the leg. The man died from his wounds.

Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan are separated by a 970-kilometer border. Of these, 519 kilometers have been agreed, the rest is considered controversial. There are frequent conflicts over water, pasture and land, often with the use of weapons.

There have been several shooting incidents on the border between the countries over the past year.

In September 2019, a major incident occurred at the site where the village of Maksat is located from the side of Kyrgyzstan and the village of Ovchi-Kalacha from the side of Tajikistan. Then from the side of Kyrgyzstan one border guard was killed, from the Tajik one – three border guards. More than a dozen residents of both countries were also injured.

According to the Tajik authorities, the conflict began with the fact that villagers in Kyrgyzstan beat several citizens of Tajikistan, which resulted in a verbal skirmish and also throwing stones from both sides, and then in a shootout of border guards of the two countries. Several people were injured then.

May 8, 2020 on the border of Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan there was an incident, during which hunting weapons were used and mortar fire was opened. According to the border guards of both countries, it began with the fact that residents of the border regions of the two countries could not come to an agreement on the use of a plot of land. The Tajik side considers the site its own, but the site is actually used by the residents of Kyrgyzstan.
