European Union High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell called on Alexander Lukashenko to refrain from further detentions of election observers, peaceful protesters, candidates and members of their teams and to immediately release all activists, human rights defenders, bloggers and journalists detained for political reasons in Belarus.
Borrell noted that during the election campaign the Belarusian citizens displayed “unprecedented political mobilization” and stressed that the EU policy towards Belarus is based on respect for human rights and democratic principles.

They expressed concern about reports of irregularities during the already launched early voting and the fact that representatives of international organizations such as the OSCE and PACE were not allowed to observe the elections. They also advocated an open public dialogue in Belarus and called for the release of prisoners detained for political reasons.
