Turkey assessed the referendums held in Ukraine as illegal

Reaction of the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs to the referendums being held to join the unrecognized Donetsk and Luhansk People’s Republics and Ukraine’s Kherson and Zaporozhye regions to the Russian Federation stated.

«We are concerned about attempts to organize unilateral referendums in some regions of Ukraine controlled by Russia. Such illegal actions are not recognized by the international community. On the contrary, they hinder efforts to revive diplomatic negotiations and further increase instability“, the statement reads.

It is noted that official Ankara is steadfast in its support for Ukraine’s territorial integrity, independence and sovereignty, as stated when Crimea was illegally annexed by Russia in 2014.

«We reaffirm our readiness to render all necessary assistance to a peaceful, negotiated end to the ongoing war based on appropriate objectives.“, – said in the statement of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkey.

As we previously reported, a few days ago, a plan was announced to hold referendums to join the unrecognized Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics and Ukraine’s Kherson and Zaporozhye regions to the Russian Federation. Referendums are expected to be held on September 23-27.

Let us remind you that on February 21 of this year, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a decree to recognize Donetsk and Lugansk regions belonging to Ukraine as a separate republic in accordance with international law. Even then, Ankara called Moscow’s decision unacceptable and expressed its commitment to preserving Ukraine’s political unity and territorial integrity.
