The Ukrainian authorities announced a document on security guarantees. President of the country Volodymyr Zelensky spoke about this document even when the delegations of the Russian Federation and Ukraine met in Istanbul. About what kind of document this is, Lenta.ru reports.
Document on security guarantees for Ukraine: who announced it
Head of the Office of the President of Ukraine Andriy Yermak announced a document on international security guarantees for Ukraine. It can be made public on August 29-30, 2022.
According to Mr. Yermak, the president got acquainted with the document. Andriy Yermak said the text of the document was “very powerful” and was prepared by an advisory group led by former NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen.
Rasmussen agreed to become the leader of the group to resolve the situation in Ukraine. According to the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky, this group should “fundamentally create concrete security guarantees for Kyiv.” Andriy Yermak said that the guarantees should extend to the military, political, diplomatic, financial and other spheres.
It is known that the Ukrainian authorities demand international security guarantees in exchange for a neutral status and refusal to join NATO. At the same time, Vladimir Zelensky confirmed the immutability of Kyiv’s plans to join the alliance, arguing that so far no one has come up with a better guarantee.
The document must be signed by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
What does a security guarantee document mean?
There is no exact information about this document on the Web. However, Andriy Yermak, who heads the Office of the President of Ukraine, said that the conditions for protecting Ukraine in the event of possible aggression from other countries are spelled out there. That is, if someone attacks or threatens Ukraine, the states that signed this agreement must provide all necessary assistance within three days, including intelligence, humanitarian aid, military and material.
Which countries have assumed the responsibility to become guarantors of Ukraine’s security is not reported. Most likely, the office of the President of Ukraine will tell you more about this at the end of August 2022.
Rumors have already appeared on the Web that Ukraine was given security guarantees by countries that are members of NATO, but this is still unconfirmed information.
